COKE PARTY

Teenagers had coke parties in their homes where we danced or just listened to the music - everyone brought their favorite 45s.  I especially liked "Going Out with the Tide" and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" sung by Jivin' Gene and the Jokers from Port Arthur, TX.

  1. Hmmm I don't think Coke Parties would have the same meaning now

  2. Probably not - we were a fairly naive generation.

  4. I'm glad you like the green hand. Once I decided to use it I needed to use the green chair also. I like to use what I can find instead of making my own - adds to the challenge. Thank you for the comment.

  5. I love this collage and we still had coke parties (when coke still meant the drink!) in the early ‘70s. I had lots of 45s, I had “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” (still love that song!). When I moved many years ago, I gave the box of 45s to one of my younger sisters, she didn’t think they were worth much and sold them at a flea market! Can you believe that?! Oh I wish I still had them. Thanks for the memories!

  6. That's interesting that you had the record "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". I thought Jivin Gene and the Jokers were only known locally. Wish I had my old 45s also; even as scratched as they were.

  7. This collage was used for the opening reception invitation to the exhibition "Gumbo Girl", Museum of the Gulf Coast, Port Arthur, TX, August 12, 2012. The hours are 2-4 if any of you might be able to attend. One hundred of the collages will be shown.

    1. Gene Bourgeois of Jivin Gene fame attended the reception. It was very exciting to meet him!
