ADRIFT AT SEA

Financial affairs were frequently discussed by mentioning whether the family "ship" was in port or out to sea.  Times were very bleak when the ship was described as adrift and sometimes lost.

  1. Times were bleak for us during the mid-fifties when we lost both music stores - Clayton Smith Pianos and Beaumont Music Store. A recession occurred and musical instruments were not a high priority to potential customers who were short of cash. Daddy visited homes to repossess instruments for non-payment, leaving with jars of jam and jelly and quilts as payments - he couldn't bring himself to take music away from the children. Mother was very upset.
